The European Student Moon Orbiter (ESMO) is an educational satellite project managed by the ESA Education Office, and involves the participation of around 300 students in 29 Universities across Europe and Canada. A one-year Phase A Feasibility Study has recently been completed. ESMO is planned to be launched in 2011/2012 as a secondary payload into a highly elliptical, low inclination Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) on a new Arianespace Support for Auxiliary Payloads (ASAP) by either Ariane 5 or Soyuz from Kourou. From GTO, the 220 Kg spacecraft would use its on-board chemical propulsion system for lunar transfer via Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange point and insertion into a 100 km polar lunar orbit for payload operations. A 12 kg miniaturised suite of payload instruments wouls perform measurements in the lunar orbit phase over a period of six months. The core payload consists of a nano-subsatellite to be ejected in the operational orbit for precision global gravity field mapping via accurate Doppler tracking of the subsatellite from the ESMO spacecraft. Other small payloads such as a biological experiments, and a passive microwave radiometer are also being considered, if they can be accommodated within the spacecraft mass and volume constraints imposed by the launcher. Procurement Policy: C(1)= Acctivity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs). For additional information please go to EMITS news (dated 05/02/2001) "Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and R&D entities in ESA programmes".
